The oldest Cemetery in Reno

On Saturday, Hubby and I had a pickup in Reno, so I decided to photograph Huffaker. Hubby asked if everything I did had to involve a ghost town. Silly question.

Pathway to the cemetery

The cemetery hides behind corrals in a residential area. Established in 1862, it is the oldest cemetery in Truckee Meadows. Most graves are unmarked aside from one sizeable fenced family plot.

When the land was subdivided for development, many graves were destroyed. Work was halted to preserve the remaining graves. Seriously, did they never watch Poltergeist?

We stopped in Carson City for lunch at Sassafrass Eclectic Food Joint to sweeten the trip. It is one of our favorite restaurants and never disappoints. I love their Okonomiyaki, Japanese-style pan-fried veggies topped with pork belly.

Next door is the historic Carson Hot Springs. The springs were by miners headed to the gold rush in 1849. The first resort, Swift’s Hot Springs, opened in 1880. For over one hundred and forty years, the resort has been a popular location to relax and soak in the warm waters.

Ghost Town books and maps

You know what it means when I have all my maps and books on the counter. It’s almost time for another ghost town trip! I am planning a long weekend with the girls in Death Valley. Weather pending, we will spend time around Beatty and at one of Nevada’s best ghost towns, Rhyolite. We have several days in Death Valley to explore, photograph, relax and enjoy girl time.

The storm is finally hitting, and Edel isn’t happy. She keeps scooting closer and closer to my chair. Before I know it, I will have a 100-pound big baby in my lap.

I have been to Austin several times, plus the Ely area to the border. It has been a number of years. I hope to expand my trips farther east this year.
