A Beary Interesting Weekend

Stan at Candy Dance
Eying me warily!

Saturday I worked Candy Dance with Stan Paher. I have said it before but the man is like the Energizer Bunny! I have no idea how many of Stan’s books we sold. I met some of my long time readers along with a number of new ones. It was great to work with Stan and talk to people about ghost towns all day. I told Stan he didn’t have to give me anything but he insisted I take an annotated bibliography of every book written about Nevada so I can better organize my growing book collection. Of course I bought a few books while I was there.

New Books

One of the books I picked up was “Alkali Angels” about Nevada’s cemeteries. I had been meaning to visit a few cemeteries in Carson City and this motivated my Sunday trip. My first stop was Pioneer Cemetery, aka Wright Cemetery, Carson City’s first cemetery. Major Ormsby and his scout, Allen, were buried here after being killed in the Pyramid Lake War on May 12, 1860. Ormbsby’s family exhumed and moved him to Oklahoma in 1880. In the mid 1860s most graves were relocated to Lone Mountain Cemetery but Allen’s remains, along with a handful of other graves, remained at Pioneer Cemetery.

Lone Mountain Cemetery dates to the early 1860s and incorporates severn separate cemeteries. One section of the cemetery contains graves of soldiers moved from Fort Churchill on February 16, 1885. Many of the soldiers were veterans of the Civil War.

I couldn’t visit Lone Mountain and not pay my respects to Jennie Clemens, beloved niece of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.

We had a little excitement on the ranch. A bear was very interested in our trash cans and showed no fear of people. To be safe, the next evening I drove my little one to put away the chickens and goats. I took a certain item with me and made sure the area was clear before she went into the chicken coop. A minute later she comes out of the coop upset and I thought a chicken died, because chickens like to die. She came to my window and said “There is a FREAKING HUGE bear in the coop!” I told her to get in the car and we called Hubby. It took a while to figure out but when my little one ran one way the bear ran the other. The goats were freaked out and ran to the big barn while the chickens were unharmed and slept thought the entire thing. I pretty sure I was more scarred than my little one, I never thought she would walk in on a bear in the coop.

Hi Tami. I was so pleased to read about you meeting up with Stan Paher in 2021. I too have explored quite a number of ghost towns. Truepeople search has a Stan Paher as being “deceased” back in 2013 at age 94! I’ve been a friend of his for many years but not having heard back from him with my last emails/correspondences, I wondered if the “deceased” status was true or not, not believing him to be quite that old. Glad to see it was NOT!! Gerry J.

That is funny; I’ll have to tell Stan he has been dead for 11 years when I next see him! The camping trip didn’t work out this year, as they rescheduled for the week I was at the beach.
I won’t be the one to tell him they said he was 94;)
I spoke with Stan about a week ago and he has already been on several trips this summer.
