Death Valley: Day 2

January 8, 2022 2 Comments

I think my mom had fun on her first-day ghost towning. She is still talking to me, so I call it a good sign 😉

Skidoo

After an early breakfast of cheese sticks and instant oatmeal, we headed out.

Skidoo

We spent the day in the Panamint Range and Valley with stops at Skidoo, Aguereberry Camp, Harrisburg, Ballarat, and Emigrant. I think I tired my mom out, she is taking a nap while I relax outside in the sun.

Skidoo Mine

My favorite stop was Skidoo, where I hiked into the upper and lower sections of the twenty-stamp mill.

Skidoo Stamp Mill
Skidoo Road Miner’s Cabin, made of railroad ties
Skidoo Road Headframt
Skidoo Road headframe
Harrisburg was a tent city, very little remains
Aguereberry Camp
Ballarat
Ballarat 1898 Jail and Morgue
Emigrant CCC Death Valley Welcome Center

I was happy to pay almost $7 for gas at Furnace Creek. Stovepipe Wells was out of gasoline, leaving Beatty the closest option. I had enough gas to get there, but driving almost two hours extra to gas up would not have been a good end to the day.

During my mom’s nap, I am enjoying the nice weather. I am torn between a few options for tomorrow’s explorations.

Nice office view!

Cell pics, ipad only and crappy internet, I apologize for any errors! 1-8-2022

Several times when I lived out West, I spent a few days with Ralph, exploring Death Valley. Ralph was older and had grown up near Randsburg, CA. He told of going with Sam (who had been on the Klondike), to Death Valley the year before he graduated from high school. The two took a Model T and drove across what is now China Lake. He knew that once he graduated, he’d be in the military. It was a trip that sounded exciting, but sadly we couldn’t retrace it since China Lake is now a navy bombing range.

There are a lot of areas and ghost towns in Nevada I would love to explore but they are now on bases. I know Fallon NAS has ghost towns, I bet Nellis does too. It would be awesome if he had pics of the Model T in China Lake.
