Pony Meadows lies several miles to the northeast of Como at the base of Rawe Peak. Fort Churchill soldiers utilized the meadows for summer grazing from 1860 to 1869. Gold was discovered 11 miles southeast of Dayton at the north end of the Pine Nut Mountains. The mining region was named Palmyra, after the ancient Syrian city. A minor rush began and soon Palmyra had 100 miners, saloon keepers and a few merchants. In 1861 a post office opened. The town grew to 400 residents with supporting businesses. Slater's Mine is a lesser-known 1892 mine in the Pine Nut Mountains. Water was an ongoing issue for the mine's owners. Conflict was inevitable with a large number of mining claims in the valley.
