Pony Meadows lies several miles to the northeast of Como at the base of Rawe Peak. Fort Churchill soldiers utilized the meadows for summer grazing from 1860 to 1869. Gold was discovered 11 miles southeast of Dayton at the north end of the Pine Nut Mountains. The mining region was named Palmyra, after the ancient Syrian city.
