What does a Nevada ghost town girl do when she has a day in Duluth, Minnesota? Explore, of course! A Kia SUV isn’t as fun as a Jeep, but it was more comfortable.
North Shore Scenic Railroad Museum
I started my day at the North Shore Scenic Railroad Museum. They have a great collection of items relating to mining and logging in the late 1800s.
Then, I took the scenic train ride. I opted for a first-class ticket with more comfortable seating, a glass-top rail car, snacks, local hard cider, and a brownie. The train passes Duluth and runs on the shore of Lake Superior.
Gleensheen
Next, I visited Gleensheen, an early 1900s estate. The fantastic main house is 20,000 square feet and sits on twelve acres. I took the self-guided tour, which allowed full access to three floors, plus the estate.
Split Rock Lighthouse
We had a few hours on the last day and decided to visit Split Rock Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1910 following a disastrous storm in which 29 lost or damaged ships.
My Little one
My Little One had an event-filled month. The six girls canoed 100 miles and portaged (carried) a 65-pound canoe up to a mile at a time. They were not re-supplied on their trip; they lived on granola, cheese, peanut butter, and noodles. To meet check-ins, some days, they paddled through the night, and others were up at 3 am. They braved a momma and baby bear trying to steal her pack, killer mosquitoes, and up to 20 ticks in one day. One night they spent several hours in rain gear, standing on their life vests until a lightning storm passed.
Her first meal request was queso, which she followed with an appetizer sampler of onion rings, fried mozzarella sticks, nachos, and chicken wings. Dinner was a hamburger, french fries, and a blooming onion from Outback steakhouse. She asked this week for take-out Chinese and a big steak.
Vacation!
I am leaving Monday for a much-needed vacation on the Central Coast with my mom and little one. We go there every year, so it is like returning home. The plan is to relax, eat, and enjoy each other.
Monday, I hope to share some pictures from the Great Western Steam Up a few weeks ago. If you don’t have plans, Genoa has a guided History Walk on Sunday, which includes access to locations not usually open. You can find information on their Facebook page.

I am not sure which emails you are asking about. I have a weekly newsletter with a ghost town each week. Some are train stations but not all.
