Fort Churchill

I hope everyone got out and enjoyed the beautiful Sunday. I spent ten days of flood preparations, living with no power or water, and trying to get the house back to normal. I was getting a severe case of cabin fever.

We still had a lot to do on the ranch and at home, but I wanted to get out for a few hours. I have been thinking about an article for next year about the best ghost towns to visit during Christmas or winter. Fort Churchill was one of my ideas, so I thought it would be fun to photograph in the snow.

Of course, Miss Edel was ready for a car trip; I swear she would never get out of the car unless we made her.

The ranch is buried under snow but the farther east we went the less snow covered the ground. I was worried about where the snow disappeared in Silver Springs, but thankfully Fort Churchill had a little left. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the pictures I wanted, but it was a beautiful day to explore the history and walk around.

The Commander’s Office was also a station stop for the Pony Express.

I quickly detoured Buckland’s Station, thinking it might have some snow. I loved the Christmas decorations they added to the balcony.

This week I am back to watching the river levels and hoping they don’t flood again.

You would have to look into the legality of metal detecting in Nevada. Historic sites are protected under state and federal law.
