Travel Update: Full Post to Follow

The weekend didn’t work out exactly as planned. But, it turned out even better; instead of one fantastic day, I had two! Saturday, we explored the Carson River Mills, the third trip this year. We always find something new, this time the trestles of the V&T Railroad. But, the best part was I got to play chauffeur to Stan Paher, Godfather of Nevada ghost towns! Such a fantastic experience spending time with him exploring and picking his brain.

On one scary descent (I hate going over a steep drop-off when I can’t see the road), Stan grabbed the “Oh S**t” bars and exclaimed, “WHOA!”. Later, he told me I was the most adventurous female he had ever met, the best compliment. I must not have scared him too bad because he said I could accompany him on a scouting trip for a college class he is teaching this summer. He told me I’m too advanced to take the course; on second thought, maybe that is the best compliment ever.

Sunday, I had the incredible opportunity to explore Sutro and the Sutro Tunnel. The ghost towns and tunnel are surrounded by mystique as it has been inaccessible for decades; even Stan hasn’t been able to visit. However, the wonderful volunteers are preserving the ghost town with hopes of opening it to the public in the future. After learning the history of the tunnel and town, we explored the site. Unfortunately, the tunnel has collapsed, but there are multiple buildings and the pond Sutro created to provide frogs to restaurants.

I met my new best friend at Sutro. If no one had noticed, I might have tried to sneak him home. But, instead, he shoved his way between my legs, rolled onto his back, and was happy to stay there.

I am leaving for Florida but will have a new post to share Wednesday. I am debating Chinese Grave or Alkali Spring; let me know if you have a preference. I have a few historic sites in Florida planned to explore but will otherwise be relaxing. When I get home, I have a short turnaround before heading back to the Tonopah area, this time for a week-long guys ghost town trip.
