Glad to be back in Nevada!

I am so glad to be back home! It is the first time I have unpacked my suitcases and put them away in months.

Thank you for your support and messages over the last few months—Shriner’s intensive physical therapy went exceptionally well. Instead of taking a week to start walking a short distance inside, we walked all over and worked on stairs on day one. Things went so well that we were discharged halfway through the week, allowing us to return the wheelchair, Yipee!, and get home before hitting heavy afternoon or weekend traffic. We start physical therapy locally next week.

Sacramento

After several days stuck in the hotel room, nice as it was, we were ready to get outside. Things seemed to calm down in Sacramento after the mass gang shooting, so we decided to head to Old Town Sacramento.

All joking aside, it was pretty scary; I’ll take driving on a shelf road any day over five freeway lanes. My last visit to the railroad museum in Old Town was several years ago. Things have changed, and not for the better. People lived in tents everywhere under the freeway and lining the streets, going about their business on the sidewalks.

Getting ready to cross from the parking garage, I heard tires squealing. Thank heaven I waited; someone drove past at crazy speeds, flipped a U-turn, and returned at hyperspeed. Finally, I braved the crosswalk to have two cars not even stop when we were in the street with a wheelchair. The kid was ready to flee back to the hotel, but I pointed out we were in a park section with no vehicles.

We made a quick loop around the park, but not even the promise of a meal out changed his mind about leaving.

We finally found the Pony Express markers adjacent to the parking garage. We met a super nice family studying history, it was nice to see I’m not the only mom who drags my kids to historical locations.

In the end, he decided fresh donut holes were worth crossing the street again.

Fifteen Mile House

We made a quick stop at Fifteen Mile House on the way home. Unfortunately, the marker is the only reminder this was once a remount station for the Pony Express.

Weekend Plans

Tomorrow, I am giving a presentation about ghost towning to a local group of professional women. I’m guessing it will be a new experience for most of them. I hope to explore some, but I need to hit Costco and get the house back to normal.
