Forman Shaft

My presentation about ghost towning for Carson Valley University Women went well. No one booed me or threw rotten tomatoes, so I call it good.
I thought Sunday would be nasty, so we decided to brave Costco. Of course, the weekend was strangely hazy but turned out nice. Mother Hubbard’s cupboard and freezer were pretty empty after being home and traveling to care for my son. Thank heavens for our Costco Citibank reward, or I might have broken my credit card.

Good thing I took my SUV!

In typical Costco tradition, I came out with more than planned. But, to be fair, I had been looking at a small tent for summer trips. So after I got the cold items away, I snuck outside to play with my new toys. I didn’t know Hubby was photographing my progress. I have to say, I am impressed. The first trial and I had the tent together in five minutes.
I am looking forward to using it this summer.

Edel approved!

Friday, we had a little time to kill, so I located the trailhead at Lakeview for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. I hoped to hike it Monday, but a storm came in. I also found another little treasure I am researching.

American Flats

American Flats Nevada

I had a nice view of American Flats while in Gold Hill. The Jones Ranch was located there. The Jones Brothers froze to death, bringing cattle from Reno. Their horse stood over them until their bodies were recovered.

United Comstock Mining Company Mill built a large mill in American Flats in the 1920s. The abandoned ruins were demolished in 2014 following multiple issues at the site, including the death of an ATV rider.

My friend Steve took me on a quick trip to Virginia City to see the Forman Shaft. I haven’t researched it yet, but the mill dates to the 1870s. This is one of those sites where I love having a drone.
