Manners

November 20, 2022 Leave a Comment

Sometimes the uniqueness of my life hits me upside the head, or rather my feet.

A friend visited this week. To give the guys some time, I retreated to the bedroom with my Ipad. I am not a television person, but I scrolled through Netflix. I don’t know what possessed me to start watching Mind Your Manners. Maybe it is the Asian influence, an interest of mine as I have traveled to Asia several times. Yup, I even visited ghost towns in Asia.

After killing time watching a few episodes, the show’s real focus hit. It wasn’t about manners but women trying to re-focus their lives after devoting their time to their families. The episodes focused on women learning to get back into the job market, dress stylishly, and present themselves better. Each episode had a section on learning to walk in high heels.

I looked down at my feet. I was wearing my Drew’s Boots which arrived that day, a Christmas gift last year from Hubby. They took time as they were custom-made for me, and we didn’t get the measures in quickly.

Guess which I will pick every time?

Hmmm, not exactly the same type of footwear. It struck me I was the same as the women on the show. I spent my life focusing on my family, and now it is time for me to focus some on myself. I just took a different route, one I’m guessing the proper manners teacher would never understand. Instead of dressing up in high heels, I got boots favored by wildland firefighters.

While the show’s ladies were taking deportment and workplace classes, I am taking classes on off-road recovery, self-defense, CPR, Wilderness first aid, and survival in animal attacks and natural disasters.

I messaged my observations to a good friend who questioned if the women on T.V. were really happy. I genuinely hope they are, but I know I wouldn’t be satisfied with that life.

My priority is happiness and living my best life. It is unusual, possibly one of a kind, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I will take exploring ghost towns, eating at “dive” restaurants, and wandering the Nevada desert. I will pit my Drew’s boots and tactical pants against heels and a skirt any day.
