Then & Now

January 24, 2022 Leave a Comment

This weekend, I worked on creating “Then and Now” photos.

Sutro Tunnel Then and now

The sample shots I took are ok but not as close as I want. A wood box with glass doesn’t take the same photographs as a modern camera. Thank you, Kippy for your input about lenses; I will try a “nifty fifty” with a shallow depth of field. It will take more work on my side, but the lens should better match than modern zoom or wide-angle lenses.

The photographer would have thought I was an Amazon Woman!

Shooting height is also an issue. Photographers stooped to the camera’s height, at least based on old photographs and watching too many movies. I researched, and I am several inches taller than the average man in the late 1800s. Next visit, I will use a tripod to drop the shooting height slightly, maybe lowering the camera to 5’5″.

I was scheduled to visit Sutro Monday for a special event, but my little one has been sick. So even though I am Covid negative and past quarantine period, I don’t want to risk exposing anyone to germs.

Wednesday I will be sharing details of the Sutro project. I might have been working on other project ideas this weekend as the “Top Ten Ghost Towns” was such a success.

Sutro Tours

Sutro is open by tour only. Friends of Sutro hosts group tours throughout the year. Better yet, purchase a membership that includes tour tickets. All proceeds are used to restore and preserve Sutro. Contact Sutro Tunnel Site Restoration Project at (775) 900-0507, or email program director Chris Pattison at chris@thesutrotunnel.org.
