Travel Update: Full Post to Follow
I drove out to get a signal and check in at home. I thought I’d share some pictures of my current trip instead of a post.
Tuesday was our “easy” day, 8.5 hours and 105 miles. The closest we got to a paved road was probably 10 miles. It’s a good thing the day was easy after our “1/4 mile hike” to an awesome mill and arrastra. I’ll share later but the arrastra was amazing and the hike was closer to 4 miles with elevation change
Tybo store, Tybo cemetery, Hot Creek Indian Cabins, Civil War Veteran grave, Six mile kilns, Project Faultless (1968 underground nuclear explosion), petroglyphs, Moores Station, Tybo toll road, Prichard’s Station and back to Tybo for the Tybo Mill and 2G mine. Plus two private ranches.

We ended with huge steaks grilled on hand cut mountain mahogany, loaded mashed potatoes and I made German chocolate brownies.

Thank you for the great info! We went exploring and found Keystone over the weekend. What a beautiful trip!! Once it is warmer, we look forward to more exploring in the Hot Creek area.

Keystone is amazing. If you haven’t seen it, Mountain View is above Keystone. It is a must see.

You mentioned “Project Faultless” near Hot Creek Nevada. This aptly named nuclear test was one of the few that were performed off of the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Howard Hughes, who owned a large chunk of Las Vegas at the time, had expressed concern over the fallout and radiation from the current NTS near Vegas. Project Faultless was a test of the geological stability of the Hot Creek area which resulted in a huge earthquake fault to form (hence the irony of the name “Faultless” :)). The next two tests in the series were cancelled and the plans to move the NTS north were scrapped.
Just a little extra history for your patrons. Thank you for such an excellent source for history and ghost towning in Nevada.
Cheers
