Key West has amazing history. We drove Seven Mile bridge, visited Hemingway House, Fort Zachary Taylor and took a tour of haunted sites.

Construction on Fort Zachary started in 1845. Prior to the start of the Civil War it was occupied by the U.S. Navy’s East Gulf Coast blockade squadron. The fort didn’t see action but the 10-inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons were a deterrent to the Confederate Navy and Blockade runners. The fort was used again in the Spanish-American War.

Hemingway House was built in 1851 and the author resided there through the 1930s with his polydactal (6 toed cats).

We visited many sites on the haunted tour. I was one of the only females who would touch the haunted silver and the only one who could lift the 64 pounds.💪 I wish I had time to return to African Cemetery where hundreds of men, women and children were buried on the beach after dying on slave ships.

Lifting Haunted Silver

Sixty-Four pound silver bar. Every ship that attempted to transported it sunk.

On a lighter note we saw lots of wildlife including manatees, alligators, crocodiles, turtles and birds. Our last day my mom treated us with a dolphin swim.

I’m glad I had my beach time and Florida history but am ready to head into the Nevada desert! We are staying home and avoiding crowds this weekend. I will be packing for my ghost town trip next week and am looking forward to taking Honey Badger out!

Have a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend.
