Extraterrestrial Highway

Open range scares me more than UFO’s

Travel Update: Full Post to Follow

We had a great family vacation, staying in St. George, Utah but visiting both states. It was strange traveling away from home for the first time in almost 2 years.

I was pregnant our first family ghost town trip, now our son is over 6′ and will be graduating from high school. I had planned on visiting tons of ghost towns but without Honey Badger, or willing travel partners, I scaled back. It killed me driving only a few miles from sites that have been on my wish list for years. I’m splitting the trip into several sections this week. I will write a few posts about the ghost towns and historic sites we visited but many location I will only share photos.

Tonopah Air Base

Our first stop was en route to the ET Highway, the Tonopah Army Air Field. It was a WWII base and trained pilots including Chuck Yeager. Two hangers remain alone with multiple foundations of the base. We continued east on Highway 6 until we hit Warm Springs and the turnoff to the ET highway.

Warm Springs was founded in 1866 as a stage stop. In later years it became a café, bar and had a swimming hole.

After turning onto the Extraterrestrial Highway, NV 375, we continued through the beautiful isolated Nevada Desert. We stopped each way at the Little A-Lee-Inn for an Alien Burger.

Of course we had to make a brief stop at the Area 51 Black Mailbox.

We bought souvenirs at the Alien Research Center at the southern terminus of the ET Highway. We also purchased Alien Tequila, which advertises an abduction in ever bottle. Other than an occasional margarita, I’m not a tequila drinker. But dang, this stuff is yummy!

Our final stop was E.T. Fresh Jerky. We picked up snacks for the road and took photos with the murals. The bathroom has a wall for visitors to sign. I was surprised to see my favorite Asian country represented.

Yummy road snacks!

I would have liked to explore the area more but it was a 10 hour trip on the way home and a 12 drive on the way there as we, OK I, stopped more. I see a girl trip soon, staying in Tonopah at the Mizpah or newly opened Belvedere.
