Tonopah’s Anti-Chinese Riot

November 20, 2025 2 Comments

On September 15, 1903, a mob of white men from the labor union went to Chinatown, demanding that all the Chinese leave Tonopah. Later that day, they destroyed the buildings in Chinatown and chased out the residents. Chong Bing Long, who owned a laundry mat, was 60 and unable to escape—the mob took him into the desert, where they beat him and left him to die. Several people involved in the ... VIEW POST

Mini trip to Mono Lake

November 11, 2025 5 Comments

I missed photographing the fall colors, but wanted to visit before the snow flies. My main goal was Bennetville for my 3rd book, Beyond Bodie. While they aren't nearly as scenic as the state park, it is a mostly forgotten piece of Bodie's history. ... VIEW POST

October 23, 2025 Leave a Comment

Dayton Lime Works & the Great Fire of 1875 Like many men of the time, Hank Blanchard wore many hats, including those of a teamster and a prospector. While primarily known for his role around Bodie, Blanchard got his start in Nevada. He built Dayton Lime Works in 1875, outside Dayton, Nevada. Blanchard built a boarding house so his twelve to fifteen workers could live on-site and ... VIEW POST
