I’m back from northern Washoe County, knocking out ghost towns in that area.
Much of the time, I was in what was Roop County, Nevada. Did you know there was a Roop County, previously Lake County? It was one of the original nine counties of the Nevada Territory. Boundry disputes led to the Sagebrush War, which lasted a whopping day and a half. In 1864, Roop County was absorbed into Washoe and Lassen Counties.
I stayed in Cedarville, which I loved; it was a cool town with old buildings, fun businesses and good food. It made a great base and was only a few miles from Nevada.
It sounds crazy, but I visited over 40 sites, most in Nevada. Many were tiny railroad stations or old post offices with maybe a foundation remaining. A lot were on private property, so I only have a photo from the road. I wish I could have seen more, but at least I can document access and a bit of history.
But there are some amazing treasures and even a murder to investigate!
Northern Washoe County is stunning, especially with all the wildflowers in bloom.
