I love visiting Death Valley during the winter. It’s amazing how Beatty can be freezing cold while 40 miles away Death Valley can be crazy hot.
Day 1 of our 2019 visit
The day did not go as planned! We splurged and rented a Jeep to go 4-wheeling and see the sailing rocks. It was supposed to be the highlight of the trip. Instead, this is how my kids remember the day:
“Remember the day Mom spent a fortune renting a Jeep so we could see some stupid rocks that move but you can’t actually see them move? And we spent a ton of time trying to find a USB adapter in Death Valley because we didn’t charge our phones the night before like Mom told us? Then Mom and Dad followed the ‘Road Closed’ signs and we ended up 100 miles in the wrong direction. They still tried to backtrack and make the trip but it was too late so all we saw all day was a big hole in the ground. We had to eat lunch in the Jeep because it was too cold and windy to get out. Then that night we went to the horrible buffet where we paid $150 and only ate bad cake and Mom and Dad only had tea? And Mom refused to return the Jeep until after hours because she was embarrassed by how clean it was? Yep, that was our day one!”
Our trip in 2019 was freezing cold. Thankfully we had cold weather clothes for the trip and extra clothing in the car. We woke one morning to find it snowed in the surrounding hills.
In 2019 we also visited the Keane Wonder Mine and in 2016 we stopped at one of my favorite ghost towns, Rhyolite, Nevada.
