Day 1 of the last trip of 2024. I explored around Mesquite and Las Vegas including the Huntsman Cabin, petroglyphs, Kaolin, Silica, Kiel Ranch and Binion Ranch.
Huntsman Cabin
David and Emeline Huntsman moved from Utah to Nevada in 1878. They homesteaded their ranch in 1891. In 1905, Huntsman became a popular stop on the railway known for fine food and medical care. During several floods, Emeline rode out to save those who were stranded. It is said this amazing woman also met Butch Cassidy on the way to Moapa.
Petroglphys
The petroglyphs are unique, appearing to depict cowboys on horses and wagons.
Kaolin
Like other settlements in the Moapa Valley, Kaolin was settled by Mormons. Like the other settlements, it was flooded by the construction of Hoover Dam. Clam shells scatter the site.
Silica
The Silica plant was relocated due to the creation of Hoover Dam. Ruins of the factory was submerged under Lake Mead, like the near-by ghost town of St. Thomas.
Kiel Ranch
Conrad Kiel started the ranch in 1875. Multiple murders and possible vengeance mark the history of the ranch. I can’t wait to dive into that story!
Binion Ranch
Newer, but still a cool history. C.A. Morehouse built the house in 1942 one of the largest in Las Vegas at the time. It became a “divorce ranch” and was later purchased by the owner of the Binion’s Horseshoe.

“ . Ruis of the factory was submerged under Lake Mead,”
Typo!

Thanks for catching that.
