On each trip to Cambria on the Central California Coast, I visit a different historical location. The lighthouse had been on my list but required reservations. I finally got to visit on a beautiful summer day.
The lighthouse first operated in 1874 to warn sailors of the point and help in navigation along the coast. A fog horn was added in 1906.
In 1939, the US Coast Guard assumed control of the lighthouse to watch for enemy ships.
An earthquake damaged the lighthouse on New Year’s Eve, 1948. The upper three floors, including the lantern, were removed in 1949. In 1975, the lighthouse was automated.
BLM now operates Piedras Blancas Light Station, and tours are available. They cover the lighthouse’s history and ecology. You can book tours through BLM.
