I’m back from Oregon; I visited 16 sites along Highway 395.
Many were stops on the Nevada, California, and Oregon Railroad. The NCO RR is also known as the Narrow, Crooked and Onery and the Never on Time and Often Late Railroad.
The Amendee Lime Kiln and Wendell were my favorites. I also found what looked like an episode of Hoarders: Ghost Town. The debris was spread over an acre and across the road. Even in Honey Badger, I had to pick my way through.
After being gone a week, I’m trying to catch up on life and emails. Top of my ghost town to-do list is Episode 22 for Radio Goldfield, the trip I just took, and finishing Monoville.
My favorite was the Wendell and the Amendee Lime Kiln.
In 1891, 2-3 railcars of lime were shipped to Reno. The kiln was built in 1893 by Charley Faldingfrom. Despite the high quality of travertine used to produce lime, the remoteness led to the downfall.
I took a picture of the presentation to show the kids that someone wanted to listen to me talk about history.
The Churchill County Museum gave me the sweetest basket after my presentation on Tuesday night. It was overflowing with Fallon goodies. I thought of pulling out my prepackaged salami and cheese boxes when I remembered the basket.
Lunch was Battle Born Bread and Hearts of Gold cantaloupe jam. The loaf was crispy on the outside, moist and tender inside. Cantaloupe seems like an odd jelly base, but it works. Lattin Farms knocked this one out of the park. It reminds me of a peach jelly, not too sweet but a hint of melon.

My big stop on the way home was Susanville. I visited Roop’s Fort: the site of the three-day Sagebrush War.
My last stop was Doyle.
Henry Butters purchased the Albert E. Ross ranch in Long Valley. He added a church within a few years and named it St. Mary’s Chapel Constantia.
Catholic services were held until 1920 whenever a priest was available. In 1994, It was relocated to its current location in Doyle, next to the cemetery.
