Hubby and I headed to the Pine Nuts to check our property. The ranch acquired it in the 1950s as a wood lot. We found evidence of prospecting and a miner’s cabin in the canyon. We used it for recreation and camping. Sadly, several fires destroyed every tree, leaving only a charred mess overtaken by foxtails.
The roads degraded severely this year. A few times, Hubby asked if we could make it through a section or if I needed a spotter. Nope, I was good. He was impressed and said I was driving stuff he never would, and he grew up Jeeping in the Pine Nuts in a 1970 CJ5 (which we still have). He said my off-road skills have improved significantly and that I did a great job.
We got through some decent-sized washouts but I was worried about where the road goes through the meadow. That section was indeed a muddy mess, with ATV’s tracks slipping and sliding and getting stuck. We decided to turn around to prevent more damage to the road and getting stuck with only one vehicle.
The family gave me my birthday present, a beautiful Nevada necklace. The turquoise is from the Royston Mine in Tonopah. My son found it at my favorite jewelry shop, Joyces, in Gardnerville.
My son picked a thoughtful restaurant in Reno for my family’s birthday dinner. I won’t give the name, but we were all disappointed with the quality of the food. On the way home, my daughter suggested maybe it was because mom’s cooking spoiled them, and the family all agreed. That is impressive, from a 16 to a 20-year-old!
Miss Edel was very insistent on the drive this weekend. Every time I opened a vehicle door, she jumped in. She got to go with me to wash Honey Badger, and we took her for coffee.

Hey! I’m with you in spirit. I live here in Gardnerville. I am a watercolor artist and I love historic buildings, barns, cars and also animals and wildlife. I have a real connection with the town of Bodie. I think I have painted every old vehicle there and a few of the buildings and one very special painting of Evelyn (from the cemetery). I am currently on the search for local barns and historic building to paint. I have recently painted Gardnerville Main Street (featured on the save the date calendar for 2023), and also I have the honor of being the artist for the Candy Dance poster of the Genoa Church. I am really inspired by historical buildings and art effects. If you have the opportunity please stop by our studio tour in Gardnerville, October 14th and 15th at our home at 1292 Kimbles Way, Gardnerville. Bob Faribank (an incredible western sculpture), will be joining me in our home.

I have seen your work and it is beautiful. The photo club has an ongoing project photographing the historic barns. Our ranch may have something you are interested in. We are in process of cleaning up our “boneyard” and displaying the old equipment. Unfortunately the way our barn sits it is hard to photograph and get Jobs Peak in the background.
I will try and stop by, I have a huge party at our ranch the next weekend so will be scrambling getting things ready.
