I had a great weekend exploring and meeting new friends. We got an early start to avoid the heat and crowds and headed to the Pine Grove Hills.
Pine Grove
I planned to start at one of my favorite ghost towns, Pine Grove, which would be the busiest later in the day. As the road is narrow and steep, we started at the cemetery before traffic headed up.
Thank you Kris, Jon, and Amy, for helping me replace the flowers I left last year, plus replacing a few faded US flags. We put out over forty bunches of flowers but still had to re-use flowers from last year that were in the best condition.
After finishing at the cemetery, we explored the town sites. The timing was good; as soon as we were down the hill, RZR traffic started picking up. We explored the boarding house, school house, and stamp mill.
I had a great time driving with Kris. It is almost freaky how similar we are. Austin drove his vehicle as a test run for trips he is guiding through Churchill County Parks and Rec. Unfortunately, I missed his last journey as I left for Minnesota, but it looked like a great day. They have more trips coming soon; for more information, see Nevada Expeditions Adventure Series.
Rockland
Next, we headed to Rockland. There is always something new to explore at ghost towns; I have been several times but did not know about the Rockland Mill and standing structure. Austin had found the structure and guided us to it.
Cambridge
Our last stop of the day was Cambridge. I’ll admit that I hadn’t slept well the night before and was overheating in the sun. It wasn’t super hot, but it felt like Honey Badgers AC wasn’t keeping up. I was ready to head home to a cool shower and killer AC.
I think it was Amy who commented on the unusual rock formation. I haven’t been to that one but had hiked to others only to find a pile of rocks. Because we couldn’t pass without checking it out, I pulled over, and Kris ran to check it out. Finding a new structure was exciting, but part of me was ready to call it a day.
Kris ran up the hill, gave us a thumbs-up, and mimed a square. I was excited, but let us a sign as I can’t pass this up. The formation was not only a square but had debris, including broken pottery.
I look forward to exploring more, really I do, but when it’s cooler!
