Variety is the spice of life

March 19, 2022 Leave a Comment

This weekend was my little one’s birthday. Of course, now that she is a teen, she won’t let me do much. The only thing she wanted was a charcuterie board. Seriously. She rarely asks for anything, and I have always gone full out for her birthday.
So I ran to Reno and went to Whole Paycheck, sorry, Whole Foods. Then, as I had a few hours of freedom, I hit a few spots to and from Reno.

Lakeview

Lakeview Ghost Town Nevada

Lakeview was established in 1863 and had two hotels with stables. In 1872, one hotel became a station stop for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. In 1881, the town became a lumberyard for timber cut in the Lake Tahoe basin sent down the Sierras in a v-flume.

Deadman’s Creek

German emigrant Mathias Fege started a farm in the southeast Washoe Valley in 1860. It consisted of one hundred forty-one acres and a “lively spring.” In 1864, he sold half of the ranch to Jacob Schroeder. The men planted an orchard and garden and hauled their product to Virginia City.

On June 6, 1865, the two men were found dead in their cabin. It was assumed to be a double murder but later determined that Fege shot and killed his partner, then turned the gun on himself.

There has remained an aura of mystery about the events and to this day the little green farm in Hidden Valley in the sagebrush-covered hills is known as ‘Dead Man’s Ranch.’

As late as 1900, speculation about the deaths continued with the Daily Appeal reporting the men died at the hands of Indians.

Glendale

Glendale Ghost Town Nevada

Glendale started in 1857 as a station stop and store for emigrants headed to the Gold Country. The town built a schoolhouse in 1864. By 1866, Glendale had several stores, blacksmiths, a hotel, and saloons.
Residents thought Glendale would be the major town and supply center in the Truckee Meadows. However, most residents abandoned the town after the transcontinental railroad bypassed Glendale and centered their main hub in Reno. The schoolhouse remained open until 1958, and in 1976 it was relocated to Sparks.

Hot Chocolate, waffles, and charcuterie

She did ask for a charcuterie board. I might have gone a little overboard but my little one loved it, especially the salami rose.

Edel Supervising the charcuterie board

I snuck in a hot chocolate bar and waffle bar with fresh whipped cream made with homemade vanilla extract. She forgave me for doing more than she asked;)
