My teens were so excited when I told them we would have a family fun exploring day. Just kidding, they reacted as you would expect from teenagers. The complaints, moans, and groans were first class.
I don’t get it; since I was a toddler, I always had to be going somewhere. My mom tells the story of not being able to find me or her keys. She finally located me in the garage, sitting in my stroller with the keys sticking out of a crevice, insisting I go on a drive.
This weekend the family had to run to Reno, so I planned to visit a few sites in Truckee Meadows. I got one location before the kids lost tolerance. I even tried bribing them with the candy factory in Wahoe Valley; I’m sorry, but who turns down chocolate?
We briefly stopped at Huffaker, the 1862 settlement, a stage station, and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad stop. I have to be in Reno later this week and will look for the schoolhouse and cemetery. I didn’t take pictures, but we ate lunch at the always yummy Sassafrass in Carson City, next to the historic late 1800s Carson Hot Springs.
There were a few fun things this weekend. One of the best Facebook ghost town groups, other than mine, of course, is Nevada Ghost Towns & Historic Places. They allow members to post, and the group is a wealth of information. I was appointed one of two “group experts,” an honor in a group of over 25,000.
The Nevada Appeal group of papers ran a story on Pine Grove by well-known author Richard Moreno. Along with Stan Paher’s Atlas, I was referenced as the place to learn more about Pine Grove. Thank you, Austin, for letting me know; I haven’t received papers in years.
This week I am trying to finish researching the Hot Creek area. Unfortunately, several ghost towns have limited information, so I have been digging deep online in my library. Next weekend I have plans for my first Poker Run in Fernley. If you are in the area, proceeds support a child with significant medical needs.
