Sutro and Carson River Mill Trip

May 17, 2021 Leave a Comment

The weekend didn’t work out exactly as planned. It turned out even better, instead of one amazing day I had two.

Saturday we explored the Carson River Mills, third trip this year. We always find something new, this time the tussles of the V&T Railroad. The best part was I got to play chauffer to Stan Paher, Godfather of Nevada ghost towns! Such an amazing experience spending time with him exploring and picking his brain.

On one scary decent (I hate going over a steep drop off when I can’t see the road) Stan grabbed the “Oh S**t” bars and exclaimed “WHOA!”. Later he told me I was the most adventures female he has met, best compliment ever. I must not have scared him too bad because he said I could accompany him on a scouting trip for a college class he is teaching this summer. He told me I’m too advanced to take the class, on second thought maybe that is the best compliment ever.

Sunday I had the amazing opportunity to explore Sutro and the Sutro Tunnel. The site is surrounded in mystique as it has been inaccessible for decades, even Stan hasn’t been able to visit. The wonderful volunteers are working to preserve the site with the hope of opening it to the public in the future. After learning the history of the tunnel and town, we were given full access to explore. The tunnel has collapsed but there are multiple buildings and the pond Sutro created to provide frogs to restaurants.

Thank you Steve for setting up both of these special days. Your knowledge and contacts amaze me. And thank you Patty for letting me take up all his time this weekend.

I met my new best friend at Sutro. If no one would have noticed, I might have tried to sneak him home. He shoved his way between my legs rolled onto his back and was happy to stay there.

I am leaving for Florida but will have a new post Wednesday. I am debating Chinese Grave or Alkali Spring, if you have a preference let me know. I have a few historic sites in Florida planned to explore but will otherwise be relaxing. When I get home I have a short turn around before heading back to the Tonopah area, this time for a week long guys ghost town trip.
