Happy Birthday Gouge Eye Chronicle!

May 10, 2021 Leave a Comment

My first post was May 10, 2020: Kirkwood, California. It was a test article, short and simple. Two months earlier I started the process of creating a blog. It is a good thing I had no idea what went into it, I would have run away quicker than I would from a rattlesnake.

I never imagined Gouge Eye Chronicle would grow into what it is today. I traveled more than ever before, learned Nevada history and geography and became an off-road Jeeper. I met so many wonderful people who are now friends and like extended family.

Thank you to those who reminded me of my love, and knowledge, of ghost towns. Thank you Tara for pushing me to set up a website and for all the work you put into creating a great site. And of course, thank you to Hubby and my family for supporting me while “Mom goes to work”.

Most of all, thank you to my readers for following my travels and learning about Nevada history. I have some exciting things happening this year: trainings, projects and of course lots of trips!

This weekend I participated in a cleanup and stewardship day at Pine Grove ghost town. What an amazing group of people who volunteered their time to preserve this wonderful town. Thank you Syd and Wayne who noticed damage to the town and starting the ball rolling and to Mathew for coordinating volunteers, mining companies and state and federal land agencies.

Volunteers spent the day picking up trash and breaking up fire pits in inappropriate areas, like by buildings and at the cemetery. Seriously, what are people thinking? Fellow explorer Carol marked the graves last year with flowers and I spent the day cleaning up the cemetery and replacing faded flowers. There were more than we realized so I need to clean out another Michaels to finish marking the graves. I will head back soon to photograph and document all structures so we have a baseline to refer to.

My sweet family sent me into the hot tub Mother’s Day morning, much needed after the clean up at Pine Grove. They surprised me with eggs Benedict and a mimosa. They got me a Garmin GPS watch, the “Rugged” version hoping it might be Tami proof, we will see about that!

My little one spent all day Saturday making me origami flowers. She is such a thoughtful and creative teen.
