Travel Update: Full Post to Follow
My daughter and I had a great girls only day on vacation. While the guys hung out at the rental we drove to Moapa Valley, Nevada. We started our day at the Lost City Museum and were welcomed by director, Mary Beth and attendant, Jesse. The museum is probably the most underrated Nevada State Museum. It was constructed in 1935 by the CCC. It has an artifact gallery, displays on local people and environment and two archeological sites. One wall has displays of what became ghost towns. A reconstructed pueblo sit behind the museum.
I planned on driving to Lake Mead to take a photograph of the lake where St. Thomas was submerged. The town was established 1865 and flooded in the 1930s with construction of Hoover Dam. The area had been submerged for 80 years but the lake level receded exposing the town once again. We hiked “down, down down to the bottom of the lake”, (my little one was impressed with my Sponge Bob reference). It’s a reasonable hike and level once you are at the bottom of the lake bed. Hubby texted wanting to know why my GPS was telling him we were at the bottom of Lake Mead. 😆
After bribing my daughter with a granola bar and stop at Maverick in Overton on the way back (dang, my teenagers are always eating), she agreed to a quick stop at Valley of Fire. Wow, is all I can say. Even with only driving into the park a few miles we saw big horned sheep, wildflowers, historic structures, petroglyphs and grave of a Civil War veteran and of course the stunning red rocks.
We ended our day where many of my trips begin, Maverik gas stations. They were out of my favorite food to eat on the road, burritos, but the staff was super sweet and made us fresh yummy steak burritos.
