The newest addition for my travels, Garmin inReach Explorer. It arrived yesterday so I haven’t used it yet. It’s a GPS including TOPO maps and will display on your phone and vehicle radio (via apple car play).
The main reason I bought it is you can communicate via satellite and send and receive texts and preset messages. I can allow someone to track my journey (or turn it off if I stop at REI, the Jeep parts store or my other favorite place, Hobby Lobby).
More importantly, you can send a SOS to a rescue monitoring center. On Sunday a similar device saved two women’s lives in Inyo County. I’ll post the link below, it is amazing they survived. Even with the SOS signal, due to high winds they could not be reached by Search and Rescue, CHP, Army National Guard or Navy for two days. Their husbands hiked thorough the night to bring them emergency supplies, I won’t be surprised if this becomes a movie.
So many places in Nevada are isolated and out of cell range. I feel much better having satellite communications. As a bonus I can text home my take-out order
