This is the first weekend in a long time I didn’t explore ghost towns. Due to the expected storm I didn’t make plans, although I might have had a few places in mind if there was a break in weather.

The weekend ended up being crazy windy. I was watching for Dorothy and Toto when I swear the witch flew by. It could have also been a huge black trash bag, it flew by too fast to tell. We woke Sunday to 7″ of snow and big drifts. In true Northern Nevada style, the weather went from sunny and 75 to snowy and 30 within a few days.

Laying low was probably needed as it has been a difficult week on the ranch. I lost my favorite travel buddy, KC who had been with me for 9.5 years. When we weren’t visiting ghost towns or working on the ranch he visited medical clinics as a therapy dog.

KC’s death left a big hole in our family. Little sister, if you can call a 100 pound dog little, has stepped into fill the void. He trained her well and she is is convinced she needs to accompany me on every trip. Edel decided her place isn’t in back of the Jeep but rather in the backseat where she sits as person would.

We had another loss on the ranch this week. The kids favorite pet goat was eaten, we think by a mountain lion. Unfortunately my 13 year old was the one to discover him. She and Hubby buried his remains and I’m sure a goat funeral is in our future.

I ended up spending the weekend changing out summer for winter hiking clothing. Friends from my work days would laugh that my closet, once full of business attire, is now filled with 4 seasons of outdoor clothing. That’s OK, I’ll take hiking boots and comfy clothing any day over heels and dress pants.

Of course I spent a lot of time perusing maps and books to plan my next trip. Fingers crossed for good weather. Now that snow has fallen in the Sierras, I plan on spending more time in the center of the state.
