Travel Update: Full Post to Follow
Our 2005 family vacation was a Nevada ghost town trip. Our first stop was Unionville where we stayed in the historic Field House at the wonderful Old Pioneer Garden Bed & Breakfast. Owner Mitzi made wonderful meals and her husband entertained us playing the spoons.
We spent several days driving to local ghost towns and mining camps including Star City. Unfortunately we weren’t able get out and explore because the Mornon Cricket had invaded the area. If you haven’t run into them before, count yourself lucky, they are disgusting! The are everywhere including covering roads.
When you drive over the crickets they make a sickening crunch. When you come back the roads are extra thick as they cannibalize each other. They make the roads as slick as ice and even with AWD we were sliding around.
Unfortunately I only had a few print photos of Star City. The road was impassable at that time so we couldn’t go farther. Unvionville and Star City are high on my list to visit again. Hopefully without the Spawn of Satan!
What I remember most about this trip was we ran into my hero, Stanley Paher. Stanley authored “Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps”. I refer to this as the “Nevada Ghost Town Bible”. It was this book that inspired me to visit each ghost town in Nevada. Of course that was the one day I didn’t have the book with me so missed having it signed.
Over the years I met Stanley several more times. He remembered meeting me at Star City because I I was the only person he had seen take a baby to ghost towns! Stanley is wonderful and now all of his books are signed and some have personal messages.
I have three copies of each of Stanley’s books. One set stays pristine in the book shelf. A second set is my workbook I use to plan trips. The third set lives in my ghost town reference go bag which stays in the Jeep.
Stan’s books are available on Amazon. But you can purchase through him at NevadaPublications.net. He also has a huge selection of ghost town and mining books from other authors. If you ask I bet he would sign them for you.
