Travel Update: Full Post to Follow

Stokes Castle is outside of Austin. To clarify, Austin Nevada which is a little different than Austin Texas! Stokes Castle was built by Anson Phelps Stokes in 1896-7. It was to be a summer home for the mine developer, railroad magnate and banker.

The castle was designed after a tower Stokes visited in Italy. Stokes Castle was built from hand cut native stone which was lifted into place by a hand winch. The first floor consisted of a kitchen and dining room. The living room was on the second floor with bedrooms on the third floor. Each floor had a fireplace and the upper two stories had balconies.

Stokes Castle was occupied by the family during June 1897 and a few days in October. They reurned for a few days in 1898 but their mine had been sold and they never visited again.

The castle fell into repair. In 1956 a relative of Stokes purchased the structure and it was later sold to a local private party. Stokes Castle is now operated by the Austin Historical Society.

Loneliest Road in America!

I visited with Hubby and our toddler son. We had lunch in Austin and explored the beautiful Reese River Valley. There are a number of ghost towns and abandoned mining claims in the area including Byer’s Mine. I was using digital photography in 2006 but somehow only have film photos from Stokes Castle. Pictures are pictures of film photos.

I am trying to find my relative Roger S. Byers owner of Byers Mining near Castle on Hwy 50. Do you have any info on him so I can contact him ? Or his family

I’m sorry, but I don’t. I would start at the assessor’s office; they can track the information down for you.
